The Milky Way: An Incredible Journey

The Milky Way: An Incredible Journey is an immersive astronomy exhibition at the Taipei Astronomical Museum that transforms complex galactic science into a spatial journey toward the center of the Milky Way.
Rather than presenting astronomy through static information alone, the exhibition uses spatial storytelling, audiovisual immersion, scientific interpretation, and experiential scenes such as the Starry Passage and the Milky Way Theater to guide visitors into a cosmic narrative. Abstract concepts including galactic structure, stellar evolution, gravity, dark matter, and cosmic scale are translated into intuitive and memorable visitor experiences.
Guided by the original characters Luca and Freya, visitors begin their journey under a dark night sky, where a faint silver band stretches across the stars. The narrative connects prehistoric Milky Way myths with Eastern and Western legends, then moves from human imagination to modern astronomical observation, including references to the Gaia mission and the James Webb Space Telescope.
The project’s central curatorial shift is from “observing the universe” to “entering the galaxy.” Through this change of perspective, visitors encounter the Milky Way not merely as a distant band of light in the night sky, but as a dynamic system that surrounds, shapes, and connects us.
By combining mythology, scientific interpretation, and immersive spatial design, the exhibition offers a more accessible and emotionally engaging way to experience astronomy.
