About The Entry
ASHROOT is a biodegradable incense-stick system centered on incense ash recycling and plant care. The project responds to the long-standing incense-burning traditions of East Asia, where temples and household rituals generate large quantities of incense ash every day. Despite its cultural and spiritual significance, this material is often discarded once the ritual ends.
ASHROOT transforms collected incense ash into a plant-care stick inspired by the form of traditional incense. By utilizing the potentially alkaline mineral components found in incense ash, the stick gradually interacts with the soil during watering, exploring the possibility of gently regulating overly acidic soil conditions. Its outer shell is made from cork and biodegradable plant-based materials, allowing it to gradually decompose and return to nature after fulfilling its protective, structural, and insertion functions.
The design preserves the symbolic East Asian gesture of inserting incense while redefining its outcome. Instead of simply completing a ritual, users place the material left behind by the ritual into the soil, allowing it to enter a new life cycle.
ASHROOT seeks to establish a new relationship between faith, nature, and circular design, transforming incense ash from a ritual residue into a medium for nurturing a new cycle of life—letting the end of one prayer become the beginning of another life.
