About The Entry
Having grown up within a traditional Chinese educational system, I have observed a troubling trend in contemporary society: children are increasingly conditioned to gauge their creative worth and personal value through external metrics, such as achievements, rankings, and recognition. From academic competitions to artistic evaluations, young people are often taught to equate success with being ‘the best.’ In this highly competitive environment, art is frequently reduced to a tool for validation, gradually stripping away the intrinsic freedom, curiosity, and joy that originally fueled their passions.
My film explores this phenomenon through the story of Lucy, a young artist who pours her entire being into creating a flawless painting for a prestigious competition. She believes that perfection is the only path to being loved and valued. However, when her work fails to win, her world shatters. She becomes deeply disheartened, retreating into a shell of self-doubt and questioning the true value of her creativity. The turning point arrives when she discovers Mochi’s handmade sketchbook. Unlike her own polished competition piece, Mochi’s sketches are imperfect, raw, and deeply personal. Through this simple yet profound artifact, Lucy embarks on a journey of self-discovery. She ultimately realizes that the essence of art lies not in trophies or technical perfection, but in the genuine emotions, unfiltered memories, and authentic self-expression woven into the creative process itself.
