About The Entry

The Terapixel Panorama restages the previously inaccessible 19th-century Panorama of the Battle of Murten as an immersive digital experience. Combining narrative innovation with advanced interactive technologies, it provides unprecedented access to a monumental work at an ultra-high resolution of 1.6 terapixels—the largest digital image of a physical object ever created.
The Panorama of the Battle of Murten is a 360-degree oil painting on canvas measuring 1000m2. It is one of the four remaining 19th century panoramas in Switzerland and the only one that has been inaccessible to the public until now. It depicts the moment Swiss Confederates gained the upper hand against the Duchy of Burgundy during its 1476 invasion, a turning point in European history. The panorama represents a late-19th century vision of a Medieval battle, instrumental in political discourse at the time. Today, the Terapixel Panorama intends to offer a critical analysis of the 19th-century image and new approaches for cultural interpretation.
The Panorama of the Battle of Murten was transported to eM+ for digitization. A Phase One 150-megapixel camera with a 72-millimetre lens was used to take over 27,000 images, which were then stitched together to create a 1.6 trillion pixels image. This super ultra high resolution image is over 3,805,000 pixels wide and 425,000 pixels high.
The painting is restaged as a digital twin in a 360-degree immersive environment and is augmented with volumetric videos, 3D models of historic objects, motion capture, dynamic soundscape, and synthetic smells to create a multisensory experience. Visitors can thus explore, engage and interact with the Panorama in unprecedented ways.
The Terapixel Panorama has been presented at the Geneva International Film Festival (2024), Swiss Month in Hong Kong (2024), Museum für Gestaltung Zürich (2025), Swissnex in San Francisco (2025), Murten Museum (2026), Bern History Museum (2026) and Château de Grandson (2026). The Terapixel Panorama can also be explored and experienced online on the official website, https://terapixelpanorama.ch/.
Furthermore, the Terapixel Panorama project has been the subject of many Masters and PhD works, advancing research on the uses and applications of AI in museums and the in heritage sector more broadly.
