“Timeline” is a powerful, emotionally grounded film that demonstrates not only what warning signs may look like, but how speaking up can alter the trajectory of a young person’s life.
Created for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, this four-minute film supports the state’s Ok2SpeakOut.com initiative by illustrating a student’s concerning behavior, and how choosing to speak out can affect the lives of everyone around you.
Designed as a threat assessment training tool for DCJS, school districts, administrators, and educators throughout the state, “Timeline” uses narrative structure and visual repetition to turn a complex topic into something immediate and impactful.
The film plays in reverse, pulling the viewer backward through a series of vignettes that reveal the warning signs leading up to a potential mass casualty event. In each scene, a student displays concerning behavior such as being bullied, drawing disturbing images, isolating himself, and a fascination with school violence while another student witnesses the behavior—and does nothing.
The film then begins to move forward in time, replaying the same vignettes. Only this time the witness reports what they see and seeks intervention. Subtle changes ripple forward: counseling replaces isolation, discipline replaces bullying, disturbing drawings evolve into creative expression, and violent plans change.
Production took place over two days in a Virginia high school with a cast of more than 30 students and teachers and a crew of approximately 15. Because scenes needed to be duplicated precisely—sometimes in reverse and sometimes with altered details—preproduction and previs were unusually complex. Blocking, camera movement, performance, and production design all had to align across multiple timelines within the same continuous shots.
The result is a two-way look at how a single person speaking out can affect an entire community–and even save lives.
