"Body by her" is a multidisciplinary art project focusing on women's physical and mental health, composed of three parts: installation, books, and audio.
Installation: Five "books" made of wool felt represent themes such as menstruation, breasts, childbirth, and appearance anxiety, with the fifth serving as an interactive mailbox. The soft yet resilient material symbolizes feminine strength, while the needle-punching process in its creation metaphorically reflects the pressures and pains women endure in society. Each book’s opening design echoes bodily scars or surgical incisions, evoking empathy for women's physical experiences.
Embedded with Arduino and Processing technology alongside human infrared sensors, the interactive mailbox allows viewers to write down unspoken questions and drop them into the box. A printer then generates a personalized response, sealed in black for private retrieval — creating an intimate and emotional dialogue.
Books: Four illustrated volumes are color-coded by age group, addressing common health issues faced by women at different life stages. The aim is to break the stigma around gynecological conditions, spread scientific knowledge, and help women better understand and embrace their bodies with confidence.
CD: Contains real-life interviews with women about their physical and emotional experiences. A QR code on the back allows listeners to scan and access audio versions via WeChat, completing a sensory journey from visual to auditory engagement.
This project represents a lifelong care initiative for women, exploring both known and unknown factors that shape their bodies and minds, and calling for greater attention and respect for women's bodily autonomy in society.
